Mapna signs significant rolling stock contracts in Iran

TEHRAN – Mapna secured major rolling stock contracts in Iran covering the manufacture of 40 heavy freight MAP-30 locomotives and to refurbish 37 Iran Safir (Siemens) passenger locomotives, along with a memorandum to support domestic fabrication of 50 passenger railcars.
The contract was signed in a ceremony attended by Dr. Jabar Ali Zakeri, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran, CEO of Iran Railways, Mohammad-Reza Babaei, the Governor of Yazd, Farshad Moghimi, the CEO of IDRO (Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran), and Mohammed Owliya, the President of MAPNA Group.
These agreements link Iran Railways with Mapna and private sector firms to strengthen both freight and passenger rail assets.
The first contract commits Mapna to deliver 40 MAP-30 heavy freight locomotives, valued at 9,500 billion Iranian tomans (USD 123.5 million). The second contract covers the overhaul of 37 Iran Safir passenger locomotives, worth 2,500 billion tomans (USD 32.5 million). They will be refurbished at Mapna Railway Maintenance and Operation Development Company (MRM), located in Tehran.
In parallel, a MoU was signed by Mapna, Iran Railways and Yazd Rail to support in-country manufacturing and reduce imports for 50 passenger wagons, with production planned at Mapna’s Wagon Pars facility, also located in Tehran.
“All these projects are implemented domestically and by the private sector,” the Deputy Minister said.
“The agreement aims to support domestic capability in locomotive and wagon production, reduce dependency on imports, and boost the share of rail in passenger and freight transport,” the Head of Iran Railways, Dr. Jabbar-Ali Zakeri, said.
The major rolling stock contracts are expected to generate some USD 163 million return as well as a 10% increase in freight transport capacity, a 30% increase in passenger transport capacity and a 5% rise in passenger transport.
